Most teams struggle with AI not because they lack prompting skills, but because they “ask AI to generate before they’ve helped it (or themselves) focus.” Single prompts produce outputs that sound convincing yet contain errors that only surface when stakeholders review them.
Research supports this. Wei et al.’s landmark study “Chain-of-Thought Prompting Elicits Reasoning in Large Language Models” (NeurIPS, 2022) demonstrated that breaking reasoning into sequential steps dramatically improved model performance on complex tasks. The principle extends beyond single prompts: structuring AI interaction as progressive dialogue rather than one-shot instruction produces more reliable, auditable outputs.
Why Sequence Matters
The context you establish early in a conversation shapes subsequent responses beyond simple information provision. Early framing questions establish conceptual territory within which later prompts operate.
Cognitive science explains why. Daniel Kahneman’s work on anchoring effects (Thinking, Fast and Slow, 2011) demonstrates that the first information received disproportionately influences all subsequent judgement. In AI dialogue, deliberate early framing exploits this constructively: you anchor the model on the right conceptual territory before asking it to reason.
Think of it like this: the first few exchanges set the boundaries of the playing field. Everything that comes after operates within those boundaries.
The Five-Phase Pattern
Effective dialogue follows this structure:
1. Frame the domain
Define the problem territory and relevant trade-offs. Don’t ask for solutions yet—just establish what world we’re operating in.
2. Stabilize understanding
Request structure and assumptions, not answers. “What factors would you consider?” rather than “What should we do?“
3. Narrow focus deliberately
Remove irrelevant dimensions. Be explicit about what doesn’t matter for this particular decision.
4. Validate before enhancing
Check reasoning before requesting polish. If the logic is wrong, no amount of polish will fix it.
5. Enhance last
Request final output only after alignment. Once you’ve validated the thinking, then ask for the well-formatted, stakeholder-ready version.
Practical Application: Feature Prioritization
A single prompt risks embedding unstated weighting assumptions:
“Prioritize these features based on user value and engineering effort”
A five-prompt dialogue surfaces assumptions for validation:
- “What factors typically influence feature prioritization decisions?”
- “Given [these features], what trade-offs would matter most?”
- “For this quarter, engineering capacity is the primary constraint. Reframe the analysis.”
- “Show me the reasoning before scoring.”
- “Now format this as a prioritized list with rationale.”
When This Applies
Multi-turn prompting pays off for:
- High-complexity tasks — Multiple interdependent factors
- High-stakes outputs — Decisions or recommendations that will be scrutinized
- Workflows with dialogue time — You’re not trying to get an instant answer
Simple tasks like data extraction remain efficient with single well-structured prompts.
Format and Structure Still Matter
Learn established frameworks (GCSE, RISEN, LearnPrompting) deeply and combine them with strategies like:
- Chain-of-thought prompting
- Constraint-based approaches
- Few-shot examples
These support the underlying attention-priming sequence but don’t replace it.
Ethan Mollick, Wharton professor and author of Co-Intelligence: Living and Working with AI (2024), makes the case that the most effective AI users treat the technology as a collaborative thinking partner rather than a command-line tool. Frameworks provide structure, but the underlying skill is conversational steering—knowing when to constrain, when to expand, and when to challenge the model’s reasoning.

Stop thinking: “How do I write the perfect prompt?”
Start thinking: “How do I have a productive conversation?”
The difference is subtle but profound. One leads to prompt engineering gymnastics. The other leads to reliable, auditable thinking.
